Ham Chan
Hong Kong pianist Ham Chan is recognized for the poetic clarity and expressive depth of his artistry. His debut album, Masks under the Mask (Centaur Records, 2025), devoted to Robert Schumann’s piano character pieces, received a Silver Award from the Global Music Awards and has drawn international critical attention. China Art praised the recording’s delicate tone and refined sensitivity, while Fanfare noted Chan’s clarity of articulation and deep respect for the score, concluding that in moments of Eusebius, Chan is among the finest interpreters. Writing in the American Record Guide, critics observed a distinctive artistic flair shaped by an independent musical upbringing and a strong affinity for character-driven repertoire.
Chan has performed across Europe, Asia, and North America, with festival appearances including Stars at the Rhine in Switzerland, Beethoven Bootcamp in Ireland, the Rebecca Penneys Piano Festival in the United States, and Music Fest Perugia in Italy. Alongside his performance career, he is active as an educator and has presented a masterclass at Salisbury University.
Known for his imaginative approach to programming, Chan curates thematic recitals that connect music with literary, historical, and psychological ideas. His repertoire spans from Bach to contemporary works, with particular attention to music that explores narrative, contrast, and inner character
Chan began formal piano study at the age of eighteen, a late start that fostered an independent and introspective artistic voice. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance from the University of Maryland, College Park, and studied previously at the Mannes School of Music, the Boston Conservatory, and Hong Kong Baptist University. His teachers include Larissa Dedova, Vladimir Valjarevic, Janice Weber, Gregory Haimovsky, and Pang Jane Cheung.
Chan is the Founder and Artistic Director of the Capital Keys Performing Arts Foundation and the Capital Keys Concert Series. The organization presents a public classical music concert series featuring solo, chamber, and collaborative performances, and offers educational and outreach activities designed to broaden public access to and understanding of classical music.
